Education Program
Climate change impacts predispose vulnerable communities to economic marginalization. Most of them lose their primary sources of livelihood, and they can't afford formal education for their children. As a result, most children from vulnerable communities drop out of school, while others do not even get the chance to attend. This has pervasive long-term impacts on a child's future socioeconomic opportunities and will continue to do so at the hands of climate change if formal education is not provided soon.
At Abayuuti we believe that creating future resilient communities starts with empowering children with quality education. To address the threat of climate change on education access for children from vulnerable communities, ACAN has two initiatives to support children from these communities in accessing education at a free cost.
Muhokya Camp School Initiative
Since 2022, Abayuuti has been operating a pre-primary school in Muhokya IDP Camp. Run by our full-time staff teachers, the school offers free education to 100+ climate-displaced children in this camp
-
Improved access to quality education for displaced children, fostering hope and a foundation for future resilience.
Since its inception in 2022, 80 children have been promoted to primary school level.
In the academic year 2024, we successfully had three terms, and by the end of the third term 23 children were promoted to the primary level, 37 children were promoted to the top class, 25 children were promoted to the middle class, and 15 children developed the fine motor skills through art and play.
Teachers Development: We have facilitated our teachers to attend childcare conferences by UNICEF, First Aid training by Malteser International, and Monthly meetings for curriculum planning
Abayuuti Scholarships Initiative
This initiative mainly focuses on identifying children from marginalized and climate-vulnerable communities whose families are struggling to keep them in school. ACAN mobilizes education sponsors, connecting them to the identified children from marginalized communities who continue paying school fees and other scholastic materials under the organization.
-
Since its launch of the initiative in 2021, ACAN has mobilized education sponsors providing school fees and other scholastic materials to 23 children from slum communities in Kampala and others from Kabarole District.
In 2024, seven of our sponsored children joined the secondary school level after completing their primary school level in 2023.
