Sound population strategy – The Nation

We are aware that Pakistan, with some 220 plus million people, is the fifth largest country in the world in terms of head-count; in addition, the population expansion continues unabated!
According to a recent study quoted in the press, Pakistan’s population is expected to peak at 314 million in 2049, before coming down to 248 million in 2100; likewise, the fertility rate for Pakistan will decline from a high of 3.4% in 2017 to 1.3% in 2100.
Before we do reach that mammoth population threshold of 314 million, therefore, wouldn’t it be a sensible idea to develop a sound population strategy so that we are better able to deal with serious global issues such as ‘environmental degradation’, ‘climate change’, and ‘crop failures/food shortages’? The 10 Billion Tree Tsunami project of the incumbent PTI government is a commendable plan to reverse the decay in the environment; likewise, we should strategize in other areas as well so that humanity as well as other earthly life-forms experience a worthwhile and pleasant existence going forward.
