14 September 2020 Uganda: Ministry of Health and WHO respond COVID-19 cases spike in prison – World Health Organization

The first and biggest outbreak of COVID-19 occurred in Umuru prison in Kampala with 154 positive cases on 22 August alone.
WHO and the Ministry of Health took immediate action evacuating prisoners and staff who tested positive to treatment centres as well as observing new inmates for two weeks before transfer.
After the evacuation, the prison was disinfected following WHO guidance and locked down for 28 days.

In the following days, WHO supported risk communication and psychosocial activities targeting inmates, prison wardens, their families and neighbouring communities.
In addition, WHO promoted protective behaviour such as the correct use of facemasks handwashing and maintaining physical distance. The organization also delivered facemasks and carried out training for health workers and prison staff.
